How to be an Australian
By Yessie | March 23, 2008
I have discovered that along with the laid back Australian way of life, Australian also like to shorten their speech and abbreviate a lot of words. Why? I have no idea but it’s quite funny to hear a typical Australian carrying a conversation with another typical Australian - half the time I have no idea what they’re saying.
Here are some examples of abbreviated words:
Ambo : ambulance, ambulance driver
Arvo : afternoon
Aussie: Australian
Avos : avocados
Barbie : barbecue
Bikkie : biscuit
Brekkie : breakfast
Brickie : bricklayer
Chewie : chewing gum
Chokkie : chocolate
Footy : Australian Rules football
So if you want to practice your Australian accent and be a “fair dinkum” Aussie, check this website out.

Footy also refers to NRL, but… guessing you’re in Victoria? Maybe not then.
